AIBF Commissioning Initiative Application Guidelines — 2008
Specific to:
Current school music educators. Applicants MUST reside in the southern portion of the Province of Alberta. This includes the City of Red Deer and all points south.
Amount, Number and Timing of the Scholarship:
The AIBF Commissioning Initiative is valued at $2500.00. One scholarship will be awarded annually at the final awards of the Alberta International Band Festival. The premiere of the commissioned piece MUST occur at the following year’s Alberta International Band Festival.
Overview:
Feedback from music educators indicates that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music that supports the richness of our Canadian musical traditions.
In school environments where resources are often stretched thin, projects such as these can make a substantial impact. School Boards or individual schools suffering with finances tend to keep the core subject areas and cut funding for music and the arts. This special commissioning initiative elevates the arts in the eyes of administrators and the public, which helps in how resources are allocated.
Commissioning is a process. From the moment of inspiration and conception to the exciting night of the world premiere performance, there are decisions to be made, creative ideas to be tried out, and memorable moments when the composer, educator and performers collaborate in their own ways to give birth to a new work of art.
Eligibility Criteria:
All applicants MUST meet the following criteria:
- Be a resident of Alberta and reside in Southern Alberta (including the City of Red Deer and all points south)
- Be a current grade junior, middle or senior high school band director.
- Provide a resume of background, education and professional development goals.
- Demonstrate a strong desire to work with a composer to create a new piece of music.
- Submit a letter of intent, briefly outlining the recent history of the school’s music program and achievements – as well as demonstrate a strong desire to work with a composer to create a new piece of music.
- Please be sure to include school and home mailing information, as well as pertinent email and telephone numbers.
Application and Selection Process:
Each year, prior to the Alberta International Band Festival, application forms and related materials will be made available to band directors and potential candidates via email and on the AIBF website. Applicants will be required to submit their applications so they are received by the assigned deadline each year. The deadline for application was Sunday, February 10, 2008.
The successful applicant will be selected based on the strength of his/her application by the AIBF Scholarship Selection Committee. The decision of the Committee will be final.
Award Disbursement:
The successful applicant will be notified by telephone and in writing. A certificate of acknowledgement will be presented to the recipient at the awards ceremony for the Alberta International Band Festival in Calgary on Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at the Rozsa Centre, University of Calgary at 7:30 p.m.
The premiere of the commissioned piece MUST occur at the following year’s Alberta International Band Festival.
The scholarship monies will be paid directly to the composer and copyist. In all matters concerning the eligibility and payment, the decision of the AIBF Scholarship Committee shall be final.
APPLICATIONS MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 2008.
