The MacEwan / U of A Big Bands |
|
| Grant MacEwan University and the University of Alberta established their respective jazz ensembles more than 30 years ago to provide a performance outlet for students to gain experience in the jazz and commercial genres. The bands have worked under the direction of such musicians as Tommy Banks, Neil Corlett, Rick Garn, Fordyce Pier and Bob Stroup. They have backed up internationally renowned musicians Phil Woods, Dizzy Gillespie and Bobby Shew and have also appeared with Sunny Wilkinson and Ernie Watts at the Rocky Mountain Festival in Banff, Alberta.
In addition to performing in numerous educational functions, the groups have performed at a variety of civic and community functions including a performance for the Duke and Duchess of York. One of the ensembles was featured at the International Association of Jazz Educators conference in Washington, D.C., and a year earlier they recorded a one-hour music special for the CBC-FM national network. The students have also travelled to many national music festivals, receiving both Gold and Most Outstanding Band awards in their class. Over ten years ago, Grant MacEwan College and the University of Alberta entered into a partnership to offer students a broader range of opportunity. The result has been a winning combination for all those involved. |

MacEwan Showcase Band |
|
| There are two Showcase Bands at the MacEwan University — one led by Torben Holm-Pedersen and the other by Allan Gilliland. The focus of these ensembles is to create a “show” style band that covers a wide variety of styles and genres.
Each band has four singers, a versatile four-piece rhythm section and a horn section that includes woodwinds and brass. This year my band has played music by Chicago, Frank Zappa, Maceo Parker, Gnarls Barkley, No Doubt, Aretha Franklin and many others. |

Grades 1-3 Concert Bands will have 30 minutes on the performance stage followed by a 30-minute clinic with one of the adjudicators in a different room.
Grades 4, 5 and 6 Concert Bands have been given 45-minute time slots on stage followed by a 30-minute clinic. This has been done to accommodate the increased set-up time for percussion that much of this repertoire demands.
Each band will perform 2, 3 or 4 selections at the director’s discretion, provided the time allotment is not exceeded. The festival does not utilize a required or suggested repertoire list. Adjudicators may comment on the suitability and appropriateness of repertoire on the adjudication sheets.
All Jazz Ensembles will have 45 minutes on stage for their performance and clinic.
Photos will be taken by Images Unlimited.
