THE JOHN K. NIKEL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP SOUTH
Dear Colleagues,
For the fifth year in a row, the Alberta International Band Festival, Calgary is proud to present the John K. Nikel Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship, valued at $2,500, is intended for a graduating student who intends to pursue a career as a band director.
The recipient may use these funds to offset the cost of their post-secondary education. To be eligible for this scholarship, students must be in grade 12 and current members of their high school band(s). Students who graduated last year, but took a year off after high school are also eligible. Applications will only be accepted from students (or graduates) who are members of bands that are participating in the Alberta International Band Festival.
We are very grateful to the Optimist Club of Calgary for their generosity in funding this scholarship for 2010.

AIBF PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SCHOLARSHIPS SOUTH
The Alberta International Band Festivals are pleased to announce four professional development scholarships, valued at $500 each, which are intended to support the professional development of instrumental music educators.
- Two scholarships will be awarded annually at the final awards of the Alberta International Band Festival in Edmonton.
- Two scholarships will be awarded annually at the final awards of the Alberta International Band Festival in Calgary.
It is the intent of the scholarship that the funds be put towards costs incurred by the recipient educator to high quality professional development conferences. Examples could include:
- The Alberta Band Association Conference
- The Chicago Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic
Applications will only be accepted from directors whose bands are regularly participating in the Alberta International Band Festival.
We are very grateful to the Alberta International Band Festival Scholarship Fund for their generosity in funding this professional development for four educators for 2010.

AIBF COMMISSIONING INITIATIVE SCHOLARSHIP SOUTH
The Alberta International Band Festival, Calgary is pleased to announce a new commissioning scholarship, valued at $2,500, which is intended to support new wind band music composed by established or emerging Albertan composers.
The recipient school music program will work with a local composer (chosen by Selection Committee) to commission a new wind band piece for young band, which will be premiered at the 2010 Alberta International Band Festival, Calgary. Additionally, classroom visit(s) by the composer during the creation of the work, reference recording by the Calgary Stampede Showband and opportunity for a free clinic to workshop the music from of the Calgary Stampede Showband will be made available to the successful recipient.
Applications will only be accepted from directors whose bands are regularly participating in the Alberta International Band Festival.
